SHREWSBURY CONCERT BAND

CONDUCTORS ANNUAL REPORT 2007

Shrewsbury Concert Band has a very good year said conductor Ken Lumley in his Annual Report delivered to the Band at the recent Annual General meeting held in the Music department of Meole Brace School.

Ken reported a number of successful concerts throughout the year and he highlighted the summer concert in St Mary’s Church Shrewsbury when the band played at the bottom of the bell tower and a concert at the refurbished centre in Frogmore Road Market Drayton, where the band sounded exceptionally well.

Another highlight was the Darwin Festival Composition Competition that the band had organised culminating in a premier performance of two winning pieces at St Mary`s Church in Shrewsbury in February. Ken added that the judging work and short time to rehearse and practice a number of pieces had put the band under pressure but all members had come though and played well.

Catherine Wilson from Baschurch and Peter Lawrence from Nuneaton were declared joint winners and shared the prize of £1,000 offered by the band for an original composition inspired by the life and works of Charles Darwin.

Ken also stated that currently the balance of the band was as good as it has ever been but that meant that if players were not there then those parts were really missed.

The committee are considering entering into some competitions in the coming year if a couple of vacancies could be filled. These include up to three percussion players and in other sections there is space for a bass clarinet, an E flat clarinet and an E flat alto clarinet and a baritone saxophone player.

Future rehearsals would continue to be held on Thursday evenings at Meole Brace School but it is hoped these would include more section work and workshops with visiting conductors.
